PM Modi Congratulates Colombia’s President-Elect Abelardo de la Espriella

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Abelardo de la Espriella after he was elected as Colombia’s next President.

In a post on X, PM Modi conveyed his best wishes for the President-elect’s upcoming term and expressed confidence in further strengthening the relationship between the two nations.

Highlighting the warm ties shared by the two countries, the Prime Minister said India places great importance on its friendship with Colombia. He also stated that he looks forward to working with the new administration to broaden cooperation across multiple sectors in the coming years.

Colombia’s National Electoral Council formally confirmed De la Espriella as President-elect for the 2026–2030 term after completing the official vote count from the second-round election.

The right-wing candidate defeated Ivan Cepeda, who represented the left-wing Historic Pact coalition.

Following the announcement, Cepeda publicly accepted the election outcome during a live online address.

Colombian voters returned to the polls for the decisive second round after no candidate secured a majority in the first phase of voting.

Early results released by the National Civil Registry indicated that De la Espriella held a lead of approximately one percentage point over his rival. His presidential campaign also received an endorsement from US President Donald Trump ahead of the vote.

PM Modi’s message underscores India’s intention to build on its existing partnership with Colombia under the incoming government.

India and Colombia will work together to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, technology, and other areas of mutual interest.
