PM Modi Calls 7.8% Q1 GDP Growth A ‘Herculean Feat’

Expressing delight over the GDP’s 7.8 per cent growth during the first quarter (Q1) of the current financial year (FY 2026-27), Prime Minister Modi on Monday described the achievement as a ‘herculean feat’.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “The collective strength of our people ensured India delivered such growth despite oil price shocks and supply chain issues in the midst of global uncertainties.”

“Doomsayers were doomed and India bloomed…yet again!” the post further read.

GDP Data

Despite global headwinds, India’s real GDP rose to Rs 81.36 lakh crore in the first quarter of the current fiscal (Q1 FY27), up from Rs 75.46 lakh crore in the corresponding quarter of FY 2025-26, registering a robust growth of 7.8 per cent, government data showed on Monday.

Nominal GDP (or GDP at current prices) recorded a growth rate of 10.3 per cent in Q1 FY 2026-27, estimated at Rs 88.27 lakh crore, against Rs 80 lakh crore in Q1 of FY 2025-26, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation said in a statement.

Real Gross Value Added (GVA) in Q1 FY 2026-27 is likely to reach Rs 73.82 lakh crore, compared with Rs 68.21 lakh crore in the corresponding quarter of FY 2025-26, registering a growth of 8.2 per cent.

Nominal GVA in Q1 FY 2026-27 is likely to reach Rs 80.53 lakh crore, up from Rs 72.24 lakh crore in Q1 FY 2025-26, registering a growth of 11.5 per cent, according to the data.

The Ministry said the quarterly GDP estimates under the new 2022-23 base year largely follow the guidelines and standards outlined in the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) 2017 Quarterly National Accounts Manual.

The new series of National Accounts Statistics has adopted the ‘Double Deflation’ approach to estimate GVA for the manufacturing sector, the Ministry said.
