Not A Grihasthi, But I Understand, Says PM Modi On Women’s Empowerment

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that although he is not a grihasthi, he understands domestic life, stressing that government initiatives are driving economic empowerment among women.

Speaking at the Nari Shakti Vandan Sammelan at Vigyan Bhawan, PM Modi said women’s role in governance is to expand as pathways to Parliament become more accessible. He noted that Parliament is poised to create history by advancing the vision behind the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, emphasising the need for dialogue and cooperation to pass the amendment bill.

The Prime Minister recalled that the legislation received unanimous support across parties when introduced in 2023.

Highlighting women’s leadership at the grassroots, PM Modi described Panchayati Raj institutions as a strong example of their contribution to nation-building. He pointed to initiatives such as the Jal Jeevan Mission as evidence of women’s growing role in decision-making.

Listing key schemes benefiting women, including Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Mission Indradhanush, and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, PM Modi added that initiatives like Ujjwala Yojana and Ayushman Bharat have improved the quality of life, with over 30 million women becoming homeowners under housing schemes.

The Prime Minister highlighted the long-standing demand for women’s reservation, noting that discussions have spanned nearly four decades. He urged citizens, especially women, to actively engage with their Members of Parliament and express their expectations.

A special Parliament session from April 16 to 18 is likely to consider amendments to implement women’s reservation.

With census delays, the government plans to proceed using 2011 data. The proposed changes could increase Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 816, reserving one-third for women while maintaining existing SC and ST quotas.

Prime Minister Modi called on all political parties to support the initiative, stressing that women’s participation is vital for shaping a developed India.
