Northeast At Centre Of India’s Development Vision: VP Radhakrishnan

Vice President CP Radhakrishnan said the Northeast has been placed at the centre of India’s development narrative under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, reflecting the government’s commitment to the region’s growth and integration with the national mainstream.

Addressing the 20th convocation of Mizoram University in Aizawl, the Vice President said improved connectivity and development initiatives are transforming the region and creating new opportunities.

He highlighted infrastructure projects such as the recently inaugurated Bairabi–Sairang railway line, which will significantly improve connectivity in Mizoram.

The Vice President also referred to government programmes like UDAN and PM-DevINE as key drivers of growth. These initiatives, he said, are accelerating development and strengthening economic and social links with the rest of India.

Emphasising the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047, Radhakrishnan urged youth to move beyond seeking jobs and instead focus on creating opportunities. He said the Northeast has strong potential in tourism, bamboo-based industries, organic farming, handicrafts and digital services, which can boost regional economic growth.

The Vice President also warned about the growing problem of narcotic drug abuse among youth and urged students to stay away from drugs and lead disciplined lives. He advised them to use technology and social media responsibly.

Praising Mizoram for its rich natural heritage, high literacy and strong tribal traditions, he also commended the state’s environmental awareness.

Vice President CP Radhakrishnan noted that Mizoram University operates largely on solar energy and encouraged students to promote sustainability.

He later travelled from Kohima after addressing the convocation of Nagaland University and will attend the convocation of Tripura University in Agartala on March 8.
