Nitin Nabin’s Gorakhpur Visit Raises Questions About His Political Identity Under Yogi’s Influence

BJP national president Nitin Nabin visited Gorakhpur and led the ‘Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy’ march with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

His first visit after becoming national president aimed to strengthen the party’s presence and energise workers ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Thousands joined the leaders during the 1.5-kilometre march. Nabin called the Samajwadi Party’s bicycle symbol ‘punctured’, while Yogi accused the opposition of blaming EVMs after electoral defeats.

Gorakhpur remains closely associated with Yogi Adityanath and the Gorakhnath Peeth. The region combines religious influence, cultural identity and BJP organisational strength.

Nabin’s presence aimed to demonstrate unity between the national leadership, party organisation and state government.

However, Yogi’s established popularity dominated the event, leaving Nabin appearing more like a guest in the chief minister’s political stronghold.

Leadership Signals and Internal BJP Dynamics

Nabin previously indicated that the BJP would contest Uttar Pradesh under Yogi’s leadership. His Gorakhpur appearance reinforced this position, although the party’s internal political balance remains complex.

The article highlights differences among sections associated with Kurmi representation and state BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary.

Caste equations, organisational influence and leadership ambitions continue to shape the state’s political landscape.

The visit may strengthen Nabin’s relationship with Yogi, but establishing a distinct political identity remains difficult. Gorakhpur’s political influence largely revolves around the chief minister.

Nabin’s opportunities may lie in states such as Jharkhand and Odisha, where he could strengthen the organisation and develop electoral strategies.

Himachal Pradesh presents another challenge, with factions linked to Prem Kumar Dhumal and Anurag Thakur, and former BJP president JP Nadda.

Ultimately, Gorakhpur may deliver organisational gains for the BJP, but Yogi is likely to receive much of the political credit.

Nabin’s real test lies in building the party in states where leadership and organisational structures need strengthening.
