NIA Achieves Historic ‘100% Conviction Rate’ In 2024, Cracks Major Terrorism And Criminal Cases

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) achieved an impressive 100% conviction rate in 2024, highlighting its ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, extremism, and organised crime. With a focus on Left Wing Extremism (LWE), North-East insurgency, and the growing link between terrorists and gangsters, the agency made significant strides in national security.

According to the NIA’s year-end report, the agency registered 80 cases in 2024, leading to 210 arrests across various criminal categories. Most of these cases were related to LWE (28 cases) and North-East insurgency (18 cases). Other significant areas included Jammu & Kashmir jihadi activities, explosives, human trafficking, and the terror-gangster nexus.

Additionally, the NIA registered seven cases related to Jammu & Kashmir jihadi activities, six involving explosives, and five concerning human trafficking. Other key areas included Khalistani terrorism, ISIS-related cases, and gangsters.

In total, the NIA secured 68 convictions across 25 cases and charge-sheeted 408 accused individuals. The agency also attached assets worth Rs 19.57 crore as part of its sustained efforts to dismantle terror and criminal networks.

LWE cases accounted for the majority of arrests, with 69 individuals detained. The NIA also intensified operations targeting North-East insurgency groups, especially the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA-I), leading to several arrests related to their alleged involvement in bombings and IED attacks in Assam.

A major highlight of the year was the NIA’s successful action against the growing terrorist-gangster nexus. In total, the agency arrested 14 individuals linked to Khalistani terrorism and 13 others in gangster-related cases. It conducted 662 searches across various case categories, reflecting a surge in its operations.

The agency swiftly handled high-profile cases, including the murder of VHP leader Vikas Prabhakar. Six individuals, including Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) chief Wadhawa Singh, were charge-sheeted. NIA also moved quickly in the extortion case involving gangster Goldy Brar, charge-sheeting 10 individuals, including Brar himself.

Global Reach And Cross-Border Efforts

The NIA also demonstrated its global reach with the successful extradition of Khalistani terrorist Tarsem Singh Sandhu from the UAE. Arms seizures across India formed another key aspect of the agency’s operations. In Jammu, a Hizbul Mujahideen overground worker was found with explosives and firearms. Similar recoveries were made in cities like Jaipur, Patna, and Ranchi, underscoring NIA’s tireless efforts to curb illegal arms trafficking.

The agency arrested 11 ISIS jihadis and 24 other individuals linked to various terror activities in 2024. Furthermore, NIA cracked down on human trafficking networks, including those trafficking people from Myanmar to India.

Training And Strengthening NIA’s Capabilities

NIA’s year-end efforts also included the swift resolution of high-profile cases like the Rameshwaram cafe blast. The agency secured five arrests and four charge sheets, demonstrating its ability to act quickly with state police and intelligence agencies.

Additionally, NIA conducted 11 training programmes for 1,678 state police officials in 2024, strengthening its operational capabilities. The agency also established two exclusive NIA courts in Jammu and Ranchi to enhance the judicial process for terror-related cases.
