As India prepares for heavy New Year travel, Indian Railways has stepped in with a targeted infrastructure response.
To manage the anticipated surge of passengers during the year-end holiday season, Northern Railway’s Jammu Division has announced a special reserved train service between New Delhi and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, reinforcing the government’s focus on mobility, crowd management, and passenger convenience.
Railway officials confirmed that the special service will operate five trips in each direction between December 27, 2025, and January 1, 2026.
The move aims to decongest regular trains and provide seamless connectivity for tourists, pilgrims, and residents travelling to Jammu and Kashmir during one of the busiest periods of the year.
According to Northern Railway, New Year celebrations traditionally trigger a sharp spike in demand on the Delhi-Jammu-Katra corridor.
With lakhs of devotees heading to the Vaishno Devi shrine and families travelling home for the holidays, authorities decided to add capacity rather than allow overcrowding to strain existing services.
Special Reserved Train No 04081 will run from New Delhi to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra from December 27 to December 31, 2025.
The train will depart the national capital at 11:45 PM and reach Katra at 12 noon the following day.
It will halt at key junctions, including Panipat, Kurukshetra, Ambala Cantt, Ludhiana, Jalandhar Cantt, Pathankot Cantt, Jammu, and the Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan station at Udhampur, ensuring wide regional access.
In the return direction, Special Reserved Train No 04082 will operate from Katra to New Delhi between December 28, 2025, and January 1, 2026.
It will leave Katra at 9:20 PM and arrive in New Delhi at 10:00 AM the next morning, stopping at Udhampur, Jammu, Pathankot Cantt, Jalandhar Cantt, Ludhiana, Ambala Cantt, Kurukshetra, and Panipat.
Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Northern Railway’s Jammu Division, said the special train reflects a proactive approach to seasonal travel pressure. He noted that the service will help tourists and pilgrims reach their destinations comfortably while allowing residents to reconnect with families during the New Year celebrations.
The train will operate with 16 coaches, offering reserved accommodation to ensure orderly travel and improved safety.
Officials emphasised that planning and additional capacity play a critical role in maintaining service quality during peak demand periods.
Passengers can book tickets through the official Indian Railways website, the IRCTC mobile application, or authorised booking agents.
Railway authorities have advised travellers to verify schedules and timings before departure to avoid last-minute inconvenience.
The New Delhi-Katra special train underscores Indian Railways’ broader strategy of aligning transport logistics with festive demand, strengthening last-mile connectivity, and supporting tourism-driven regional economies during critical travel windows.
