NEET-UG Controversy: SC Issues Notice Regarding NTA’s Latest Transfer Applications

The Supreme Court has taken a significant step by issuing a notice regarding a new set of petitions filed by the National Testing Agency (NTA), which seeks to transfer pending cases related to the alleged NEET-UG paper leak from the Rajasthan High Court to the apex court.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud led a session on Monday that made this decision.

The court has combined the NTA’s transfer petition with the main batch of cases, including calls to cancel the NEET-UG exam, scheduled for hearing on 18 July.

The bench, which also includes Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, opted not to issue a formal stay on the ongoing proceedings in the Rajasthan High Court, noting that typically, the high court does not proceed once the Supreme Court has issued a notice.

Previously, on 20 June, the Supreme Court had halted proceedings across various high courts regarding the NEET-UG paper leak allegations and permitted the withdrawal of other transfer petitions filed by the NTA concerning compensatory marks awarded.

On 13 June, the apex court closed discussions on the grace marks issue after the NTA withdrew scorecards for 1,563 candidates who had received compensatory marks.

These candidates had the option to either retake the exam on 23 June or participate in counseling based on their actual scores.

In a recent affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court, the Centre stated that an analysis conducted by IIT Madras found no evidence of widespread malpractice or any localized benefit leading to abnormal scores in the NEET-UG examination held on 5 May.
