Punjab Congress’ Senior leader, Navjot Singh Sidhu will be released today. He was in Patiala Jail from the past 10 months. He was actually going to get released in May but got early release on account of “good behavior”. He was sentenced by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the ‘Road Rage Case’.
A tweet from his official account this morning said that the 59-year-old cricketer-turned-politician will address the media outside jail around noon.
Near the Sheranwala Gate crossing in Patiala, cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu and his friend Rupinder Singh Sandhu allegedly left their Maruti Gypsy parked in the centre of the street. They were requested to make room when 65-year-old Gurnam Singh arrived at the location in a car. In a fit of rage, Sidhu assaulted Gurnam and took his vehicle keys before running away, preventing him from receiving medical attention. Gurnam was driven in a tricycle by friends to the neighborhood Rajindra Hospital. Gurnam was pronounced deceased upon arrival. They arrested Sidhu and Sandhu.
Even after all this, he was acquitted by the court because of ‘benefit of doubt’. The victim’s family was not happy with the verdict of the court so they appealed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. After this, it took a series of jurisdiction by different courts of the nation to convict the politician. But finally, the apex court decided on this case and convicted Sidhu.
Laal Singh and Mohinder Singh Kaypee, two prominent members of the Congress, paid Navjot Singh Sidhu a visit in prison. The two spoke with Navjot Singh Sidhu for almost 30 minutes.
After coming out, Laal Singh said, “The workers are eager to welcome the firebrand leader, who is known for his oratory skills.Sidhu is geared up to revive the party in the state and across the nation.”
Additionally, the Punjab Police have increased their visibility at Sidhu’s home. Sidhu is covered by Z plus protection. Once Sidhu is released from custody, a security squad will be assigned to him in accordance with protocol, according to police officials.
