The decision to appoint Kapil Mishra as the Deputy Chief of Delhi BJP has surprised even some leaders within the party. According to sources, this appointment was made at the national level. Just four days ago, Kapil Mishra’s name was not even included in the declared team of the state BJP.
The announcement of Kapil Mishra’s appointment as Deputy Chief in Delhi BJP on Saturday has sparked new discussions within the party. It is said that a national leader intentionally left one position of the Deputy Chief vacant. The consensus on Kapil Mishra’s appointment was not easily reached. Therefore, on August 1, along with seven other positions, the Delhi team was announced. The controversy surrounding Mishra’s name delayed the decision for four days. However, no one in the Delhi BJP is ready to openly speak about this.
Kapil Mishra, who was once a prominent spokesperson for the Aam Aadmi Party and a minister in the Delhi government, made several inappropriate and controversial comments about BJP’s top leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After falling out with Arvind Kejriwal, he was shown the way out by the AAP. BJP’s MP from North East Delhi, Manoj Tiwari, inducted him into the BJP. However, his hate speech regarding the riots in Delhi last year created a lot of heated discussions. Since then, his supporters have presented him as a firebrand face of Hindutva.
Even when Aadesh Gupta was made the head of Delhi BJP, a Member of Parliament had tried to exert pressure to get Kapil Mishra an important position. However, Gupta did not include Mishra in his team. According to sources, at a time when the Prime Minister is trying to gain support among Muslim voters through the Pasmanda community, including firebrand leaders like Mishra in the mainstream politics of the party was not agreeable to many.
As per the BJP’s constitution, there are eight positions of the Deputy Chief at the state level. However, on August 1, only seven appointments were made in the Delhi team. Sources suggest that the announcement was supposed to be for eight positions. However, a senior leader intervened and held back one name. Four days later, Kapil Mishra was abruptly appointed as the Deputy Chief. According to sources, a prominent leader was keen on appointing Kapil Mishra as the State President.
The news about this appointment has also impacted Bharat Express’s report from July 31, which stated that “even for Delhi’s downfall, the party considers not just its several central leaders and ministers responsible, but also many RSS officials are putting pressure to give their followers important responsibilities in the organization from ticket distribution to organization formation.” Despite the ongoing discussions in Delhi politics, many ministers, national leaders, and several officials of the RSS were trying to put pressure to assign important responsibilities to their followers in the organization.
The decision of any appointment at the state level is made by the state president. However, Kapil Mishra’s thank you tweet to the national president JP Nadda has stirred discussions. He wrote, “Thank you to the national president for considering me worthy of this responsibility.” After that, he also thanked the Home Minister and the state president. The language of Kapil Mishra’s tweet is being discussed among party leaders as it shows that the appointment was not independent of the central leadership.
