Nari Shakti Sammelan: PM Modi Signals Major Step On Women’s Reservation

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi indicated that Parliament will likely take a significant step on women’s representation. He said a key decision on the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam will come in the coming days.

Addressing the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Sammelan’ at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, the Prime Minister began his speech by paying tribute to victims of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre and extending greetings on the occasion of Baisakhi.

Speaking about the proposed developments, PM Modi stated, “India is about to make one of the most significant decisions of the 21st century; I say this with a strong sense of responsibility. This decision is dedicated to the Nari Shakti and Nari Shakti Vandan.”

The Prime Minister added that Parliament would soon act to translate long-standing discussions on women’s participation into concrete policy. He stressed that equality and social justice must become integral to governance.

Referring to the timeline for parliamentary deliberations, PM Modi said, “From the State Assemblies to the Parliament, the end of decades of waiting is 16, 17 and 18 (referring to April 16-18),” indicating the scheduled session later this week.

The Prime Minister recalled that the legislation was first passed in 2023 in the new Parliament building. He emphasised the need for timely implementation.

PM Modi noted that broad political consensus had supported the law. He expressed confidence that parties would also conduct further discussions with cooperation.

During the event, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta shared a toll-free number (9667173333) to gather public support for the initiative.

The Sammelan brought together women achievers and stakeholders from multiple sectors, including governance, science, business, sports and social work, focusing on the role of women in India’s growth.

PM Modi also addressed the audience directly, saying, “Through this event, we are receiving the blessings of mothers and sisters from across the nation. I have not come here to wake you up or give you orders, but to seek your blessings. You all have come here from different parts of the nation, and I thank you for your time.”

Highlighting the long history of debate around women’s reservation, PM Modi said the issue had been discussed for decades and had seen contributions from multiple political parties and generations of leaders. He reiterated that it would be unacceptable for such a law to remain unimplemented.

The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam provides for one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies. Many regard it as a major reform in India’s political framework.

The government has positioned the initiative as part of its broader push towards women-led development. The upcoming parliamentary session will play a crucial role in shaping its rollout.
