Nandigram 2021 Outcome Could Repeat Across Bengal, Says PM Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the political outcome seen in Nandigram during the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections could extend across the state this time, as campaigning intensifies ahead of polling.

Addressing a public meeting in Haldia in East Midnapore district, PM Modi pointed to what he described as a visible shift in voter sentiment, suggesting that constituencies such as Bhabanipur may witness a similar result.

In the 2021 elections, Suvendu Adhikari defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram. Banerjee later retained office after winning a by-election from Bhabanipur.

In the current contest, Adhikari is contesting from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur, setting up a direct political contest once again.

During his speech, PM Modi criticised the Trinamool Congress government, alleging that the state has lagged in development compared to other parts of the country. He referred to Haldia’s industrial past, stating that several units in the region have shut down over time.

PM Modi said that if the Bharatiya Janata Party forms the government in West Bengal, it would focus on job creation, including organising employment fairs for young people. He also indicated that measures such as implementing the 7th Pay Commission are under consideration.

The Prime Minister emphasised governance based on constitutional principles, adding that citizens’ rights and access to services would be ensured. He also raised concerns over law and order, particularly relating to women’s safety, and said the issue remains a key concern among voters.

PM Modi further stated that addressing illegal infiltration and providing citizenship to eligible refugees would be among the priorities if the BJP comes to power.

With polling scheduled later this month, political activity has intensified across West Bengal, with major parties stepping up their campaigns in key constituencies.
