Muslim Schoolgirl in Jaipur Rally in Support of Hijab after BJP MLA Expresses Concerns

A group of Muslim girl students from a government senior secondary school in Jaipur gathered outside the Subhash Chowk police station to voice their grievances against BJP MLA Balmukund Acharya. The protest aimed to demand action against the legislator for objecting to girls wearing hijab during a school event.

The demonstrators, several of whom jammed the road outside the police station, raised slogans against the BJP MLA and called for an apology from him. They also insisted on filing an FIR against Acharya for his comments regarding the hijab during a recent school function.

The girls shared their perspective with reporters, stating that the MLA had attended the school’s annual function and questioned the permissibility of hijabs, expressing concerns about how the girls could breathe while wearing them. The students emphasized the need for an apology from the legislator.

Congress MLA Rafeek Khan attempted to raise the issue in the Rajasthan Assembly, but the Speaker denied him the opportunity to speak and expunged his statement from the assembly proceedings.

In response to the protest, Acharya, the MLA from Hawa Mahal constituency, explained that he had inquired with the school principal about the dress code rules for such events. He highlighted the apparent presence of two different types of attire – hijab and burqa – worn by the girls during the program.

Acharya defended his inquiry, stating, “Why are there two types of dress codes in schools? I did not go to Madrasas and ask them to change their dress. They have their rules.”

Assistant Police Commissioner (North) Dr Hemant Jakhar confirmed that the girl students and their families protested outside the police station, demanding an apology from the MLA for his remarks. A complaint has been filed in this regard, and the matter is currently under investigation. Efforts are underway to pacify the girl students and their families.
