Mumbai’s Future Gateway To The World: Terminal 1 Transformation At CSMIA

Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), the operator of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), has announced an ambitious redevelopment plan for Terminal 1 (T1) that will significantly enhance the airport’s capacity and passenger experience. The modernization project, set to be completed by 2028-29, will increase T1’s capacity by 42%, enabling it to process 20 million passengers annually.

As part of the comprehensive transformation, the first phase of the T1 redevelopment will begin in November 2025. This will further involve the demolition of the existing terminal to make way for the new structure. MIAL has devised a phased construction approach to ensure minimal disruption to airport operations.

During this period, Terminal 2 (T2), alongside the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, will manage the increased passenger traffic resulting from T1’s closure.

Mr. Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings Limited, commented, “The team at CSMIA is working tirelessly with our stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition, with minimum disruption to daily operations or passenger experience. This redevelopment is not only about expanding capacity—it is about future-proofing our city’s place on the global stage.”

A Vision For Innovation And Sustainability

Inspired by nature, the terminal will feature biophilic design elements, with indoor greenery, natural light, and open spaces intended to uplift passengers. The terminal’s architecture will incorporate wave-inspired forms, reflecting the fluidity and movement of the ocean, setting a bold precedent for sustainable airports worldwide.

Once completed, T1 will also feature state-of-the-art infrastructure upgrades, including a cutting-edge baggage handling system, district cooling, and advanced electrical substations.

These upgrades will enhance operational efficiency across both airside and landside operations, ensuring that CSMIA remains at the forefront of aviation infrastructure.

Revolutionizing Connectivity And Passenger Experience

A key highlight of the redevelopment is the creation of a Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH), designed to integrate Mumbai’s air, rail, and road networks. This hub will provide seamless connectivity for passengers, offering direct metro access, underground bus stations, and other transport options.

The new terminal will revolutionize travel in India by offering a smooth, interconnected journey for passengers from multiple modes of transportation.

In addition, advanced passenger technologies like DigiYatra, self-baggage drop, and eGates will streamline the travel experience, ensuring quick and efficient movement through the airport even with the increase in passenger numbers.

Future-Proofing Mumbai As A Global Aviation Hub

As Mumbai cements its position as a key international aviation hub, the transformation of T1 will reflect the city’s dynamic growth and readiness for the future.

The redevelopment project, with a total built-up area of over two million square feet, promises to set new standards in passenger convenience, sustainability, and innovation.

Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) is manage by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), a subsidiary of the Adani Group. As part of AAHL’s broader vision, MIAL aims to position Mumbai International Airport as India’s busiest and most advanced airport ecosystem.

The redevelopment of Terminal 1 is part of a larger effort to create a world-class air-travel experience, supporting the continued growth of Mumbai as a global destination.

With this redevelopment, MIAL is not just expanding its capacity—it is shaping the future of air travel and setting the stage for Mumbai to become a true gateway to the world.
