In a recent exclusive interview with The Assam Tribune at his official residence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reflected on the transformation of the Northeast region from neglect to abundance. He emphasized the government’s commitment to integrating the Northeast with the rest of the country and outlined various initiatives aimed at fostering development and addressing security challenges in the region.
Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the historical neglect the Northeast region faced since Independence, particularly under successive Congress government. He highlighted the shift in the government’s approach from isolation to integration, aimed at unleashing the region’s potential.
Modi outlined significant investments made in the Northeast over the past decade, surpassing previous allocations by multiple folds. He emphasized the infrastructural developments, including critical connectivity projects like the Bogibeel Bridge and Bhupen Hazarika Setu, which have enhanced connectivity within the region and with the rest of the country.
The Prime Minister also underscored the importance of empowering the youth of the Northeast through education, sports, and entrepreneurship, citing the establishment of the country’s first Sports University in Manipur and the emergence of thousands of startups in the region.
Addressing the issue of insurgency, Modi highlighted the government’s firm yet compassionate approach, resulting in numerous peace agreements and a significant reduction in insurgency incidents. He emphasized the surrender of thousands of insurgents and the withdrawal of AFSPA from most parts of the Northeast as indicators of improved security.
To overcome communication bottlenecks, Modi emphasized the government’s focus on improving infrastructure connectivity, including roads, railways, airways, and waterways. He highlighted achievements such as the expansion of the rail network, operationalization of new airports, and the establishment of international internet gateways.
Responding to concerns about Chinese claims over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Modi reaffirmed India’s sovereignty over the region and outlined ongoing development projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure and livelihoods in Arunachal Pradesh. He emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing border disputes and ensuring the safety and development of all regions.
Modi discussed efforts to promote ethnic harmony in Manipur and measures to address infiltration challenges, particularly from Myanmar. He highlighted the government’s support for relief and rehabilitation efforts and initiatives to secure the border, including the construction of fencing and collaboration with state governments.
In conclusion, Prime Minister Modi reiterated the government’s dedication to the holistic development and security of the Northeast region. He emphasized the transformative impact of ongoing initiatives and expressed optimism for the region’s bright future as an integral part of India’s growth story.
