BSP supremo Mayawati criticized the Supreme Court’s decision to divide Scheduled Castes (SC) into sub-castes during a press conference in Lucknow. She expressed her party’s strong disagreement with the ruling, arguing that creating a new reservation list would lead to significant problems.
Mayawati stated that revisiting a 20-year-old decision in the Punjab state case is inappropriate. She emphasized that dividing SCs into sub-castes is not a sound decision and equated the Supreme Court’s ruling to a plan aimed at ending reservations.
She also questioned the standards of the creamy layer, suggesting that the current framework is flawed. Mayawati urged that no future attempts should be made to alter reservation policies and called for the inclusion of reservation in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution to prevent such changes.
Warning the Scheduled Castes about the urgency of the situation, Mayawati emphasized the need for unity within the SC-ST communities. She stated that if they remain divided, their opponents will exploit the situation to their disadvantage.
