On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the work of Odisha’s Maithili Bhue, crediting her efforts in forest conservation with inspiring more women in the Debrigarh region to protect nature while building livelihoods.
Speaking during the 137th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, PM Modi recalled how Bhue, from Dhodrokusum village in Bargarh district, once depended on the forest for firewood, Mahua flowers, Kendu leaves, bamboo shoots and other forest produce. Her association with Debrigarh Eco-Tourism later changed her engagement with the forest.
Conservation work became a source of livelihood for Bhue, while her efforts encouraged other women in the area to take up similar responsibilities.
PM Modi said more than 60 women are now involved in forest conservation. Their work includes protecting wildlife, developing grasslands and supporting eco-tourism activities.
The Prime Minister praised the women for showing that environmental protection and economic progress can move together.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi welcomed PM Modi’s recognition of Bhue’s work and said it was a matter of pride for the state.
Majhi said Bhue’s involvement in eco-tourism had helped bring more than 60 women into forest and wildlife conservation while supporting their economic independence. He described their collective work as an example of Odisha’s ‘Nari Shakti’ and praised the women for contributing to environmental protection, women’s empowerment and Odia Asmita.
The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to PM Modi for bringing Bhue’s efforts and those of other women from Debrigarh to national attention through ‘Mann Ki Baat’.
PM Modi said the experience of Bhue and the other women demonstrated how local initiatives can create wider social change while protecting natural resources.
