Mann Ki Baat: PM Modi Highlights Inspiring River Cleanup Mission

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised a group of young volunteers from Basti district in Uttar Pradesh for transforming a polluted stretch of the Manorama River through dedication, teamwork and environmental awareness.

Speaking during the 134th episode of Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister reflected on the deep emotional connection many people share with rivers, ponds and other water bodies. He said childhood memories associated with nature often inspire people to protect and preserve their surroundings.

PM Modi highlighted the story of Akash Gupta, who became concerned after witnessing the deteriorating condition of the Manorama River in his village.

Once known for its clean waters, the river had gradually become polluted with plastic waste, garbage and water hyacinth.

Rather than complain, Akash launched a river-cleaning campaign with his friends under the motto, ‘No complaints, a fresh start’.

Using simple tools, the volunteers removed waste and water hyacinth from the Manorama River, often clearing up to 50-60 kg of garbage in a day. Their efforts revived a section of the river and inspired greater public awareness and community participation.

PM Modi said the initiative showed how ordinary citizens can drive positive change through collective action.

The Prime Minister also cited another example from Goa, where retired teacher Balkrishna Aiya helped address water shortages in the Maddi-Tolap area by contributing to efforts to lay pipelines and improve water access for local households.

The Prime Minister said both initiatives demonstrate the power of citizen-led action and community service. He emphasised that lasting change begins when people choose to become part of the solution and work consistently for the welfare of society.
