Mann Ki Baat: PM Modi Highlights Elephant Return, Pygmy Hog Conservation In Assam

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted wildlife conservation efforts in Assam during the 138th episode of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, pointing to the return of elephants to a forest area and the revival of the endangered pygmy hog population.

PM Modi said protecting the environment not only safeguards trees, plants and wildlife but strengthens the ecosystems that sustain life. He cited conservation initiatives in different parts of the country as examples of how sustained efforts can restore natural habitats.

Highlighting the Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam, the Prime Minister said the area was once home to elephants, but increasing human encroachment on forest land had forced the animals to move away. He said authorities cleared the encroachments three years ago, after which elephants gradually returned to the forest.

Herds are now being seen in areas where the animals had remained absent for years, the Prime Minister said.

PM Modi highlighted efforts to protect the pygmy hog, one of the world’s smallest and rarest wild pigs. He said the species had faced a serious threat to its survival before a conservation programme began with just six pygmy hogs.

The programme resettled the animals in forests and restored the grasslands they depend on for survival.

According to PM Modi, the initiative has produced encouraging results, with the pygmy hog population now rising to more than 190.

PM Modi said Assam’s efforts show how habitat restoration can revive wildlife and strengthen environmental conservation.
