Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted the Centre’s social security initiatives, saying affordable insurance schemes are providing financial protection to crores of families across the country.
Speaking during the 135th episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi urged citizens to spread awareness about these schemes so that more families could benefit.
The Prime Minister shared the story of the Pethkar family from Bahadarpura village in Maharashtra’s Nanded district, which chose to celebrate a family wedding by arranging accident insurance for around 3,500 villagers.
Each beneficiary received an insurance cover of ₹1 lakh, reflecting the family’s desire to support others during times of hardship rather than offering conventional gifts.
PM Modi said the initiative reflected how small gestures can provide financial security during difficult times. He highlighted the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, which offers ₹2 lakh accident insurance for an annual premium of ₹20.
The scheme has enrolled over 58 crore people, including nearly 28 crore women, with more than ₹3,700 crore disbursed to beneficiaries.
PM Modi also highlighted the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, which offers a ₹2 lakh life insurance cover for an annual premium of ₹436. He said over 27 crore people have enrolled, with nearly 11 lakh families receiving around ₹22,000 crore in assistance, helping them cope with financial hardships.
Emphasising the importance of financial preparedness, the Prime Minister said even a small premium could provide a vital safety net during difficult times. He encouraged citizens to inform their relatives, friends and neighbours about these schemes so that more families could secure affordable insurance coverage.
