Educational institutions across the Imphal Valley in Manipur will remain closed until 23 November to prioritize the safety of students, teachers, and staff following ongoing unrest.
The decision was announced through an order issued by Daryal Juli Anal, Joint Secretary of the Higher and Technical Education Department, on Wednesday.
The move comes in response to curfews imposed by district authorities following violent incidents in several areas.
The closures affect all government and government-aided schools, colleges, and universities in districts under curfew, including Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching.
These measures are being taken as a precautionary step after recent clashes and public unrest.
Tensions escalated on 16 November after the recovery of six bodies in the Jiribam district over two days.
The victims included three missing children and three women.
The discovery sparked widespread violence, particularly in Imphal East and Imphal West districts, compelling authorities to enforce stringent measures.
While curfews remain in effect across the valley, authorities provided a brief relaxation on Thursday morning.
Residents in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Kakching districts were allowed to step out between 5 AM and 10 AM to purchase essentials and attend to urgent matters.
Officials noted that no major incidents reported during the relaxation period.
In a separate development, the state extended the suspension of mobile internet and data services in seven districts, including Kangpokpi and Churachandpur, for an additional three days.
This measure aims to curb the spread of misinformation and maintain order. The suspension, which began at 5:15 PM on Wednesday, will continue until 5:15 PM on Saturday.
The Imphal Valley, comprising five key districts, remains tense as residents navigate the impact of curfews and restrictions.
While the state government emphasizes the safety of its citizens, the closures of educational institutions and communication services underline the severity of the situation.
Authorities continue to monitor the law-and-order situation closely, with efforts underway to restore calm in the affected regions.
