According to information received, the victim, Chandni Devi, a resident of Jatpura village in the Nuryia Thana area of Pilibhit, has been in conflict with her neighbors, Hori Lal Lalta Prasad, and others, over her land. A case had been filed two years ago regarding this issue, in which Hori Lal and other accused were sent to jail. However, the case is still ongoing in the ADJ Court. Despite continuous pressure on Chandni Devi to withdraw her statement and compromise, she steadfastly stood her ground and filed her statement against Hori Lal and others on July 25.
In response to her firm stance, on the night of July 31, Hori Lal, Lalta Prasad, Sundar Lal, and Kuvar Sen entered Chandni Devi’s house and subjected her to a brutal assault with sticks and rods, accompanied by verbal abuse. The attackers tore her clothes and left her half-naked, while someone captured the entire ordeal on video, which has now been circulating rapidly on social media. When the victim approached the Nuryia Thana to report the incident, she was turned away, leaving her with no choice but to seek justice with her family at the SP’s office. There, she raised her voice against the atrocities she endured.
Upon seeing the gravity of the entire incident, Pilibhit SP Atul Sharma has assured the victim of justice and handed over the case for a thorough investigation to the Sadar Circle Officer. Simultaneously, another incident of severe violence against women has recently garnered attention in Manipur, further highlighting the grave issue of atrocities against women in the country.
The unfolding events will now depend on how the police handle the case with the utmost seriousness and how soon justice is delivered to the aggrieved victim.
