In a tragic incident in Odisha’s Kalahandi district, a man has been apprehended for the murder of his daughter and her boyfriend. The couple, both in their early 20s, were found hanging from a tree near their village on July 9, according to the police.
The police revealed that the motive behind the killings was the family’s disapproval of the relationship due to the couple being distant relatives. The girl’s father, along with her uncle and brother-in-law, has been taken into custody in connection with the crime.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhilas G stated that the man and the woman had been involved in a romantic relationship for approximately a year. However, the family discovered their relationship during the Rath Yatra festival last month and vehemently opposed it, as their community prohibits marriages between relatives.
Despite warnings from the family, the couple continued their relationship, leading to a strained situation. On June 30, the couple went missing, causing the family to initially assume that they had eloped.
However, later that night, the family discovered the couple hiding in a sugarcane field. Taking advantage of the situation, the accused lured them near a funeral ground, where they allegedly strangled them to death, as per the police’s account.
To mislead the authorities, the woman’s father also filed a missing person report, added the SP.
The arrest of the father, along with the uncle and brother-in-law, sheds light on the tragic consequences of a forbidden relationship within the community. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing such matters through open communication, understanding, and respecting individual choices while avoiding resorting to violence.
