Mamata Banerjee breaks silence, foresees benefit for Mahua Moitra amidst controversy
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has broken her silence on the controversy surrounding Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra’s potential expulsion from the Lok Sabha, asserting that it could enhance Moitra’s prospects in the upcoming general election. Banerjee, speaking in Kolkata, revealed that Moitra’s expulsion was being planned but suggested it might work in Moitra’s favor.
Expressing disdain for the BJP, Banerjee criticized the arrests of her party’s MLAs, including Minister Jyotipriya Mallick, implicated in an alleged multi-crore ration scam. Defiant, Banerjee declared retaliation, stating, “If they defame four of us… there are cases of murder against them. I will put eight of them in jail.”

Despite previous silence, Banerjee’s support for Moitra emerged as she anticipated the expulsion. Moitra, accused of accepting bribes to target the Modi government, was appointed as the district chief of Krishnanagar, adding a twist to the narrative.
Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool’s National General Secretary, briefly acknowledged Moitra as a “victim of politics” on November 9. Earlier, Derek O’Brien, Trinamool Congress’ Rajya Sabha MP, hinted at an impending decision post the inquiry, during which Moitra criticized the committee for asking “filthy” questions.

The committee’s report, now with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, recommends Moitra’s expulsion, deeming her actions “highly objectionable, unethical, heinous, and criminal.” Moitra admitted sharing Parliament server login credentials, arguing it’s a common practice among MPs. The BJP seized on Trinamool’s initial silence, claiming Moitra had been “abandoned” and suggesting guilt on the part of Banerjee. The political drama unfolds as the inquiry’s outcome awaits a decision.
