Mamata Banerjee Addresses ‘Sanatana’ Remark, Emphasizes Respect For People Of Tamil Nadu

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has voiced her concerns regarding Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s controversial “Sanatana Dharma” comments, which have ignited a political controversy ahead of various state elections and triggered criticism from the BJP. This situation has also posed a challenge for the opposition alliance INDIA, requiring its leaders to employ diplomatic skills to maintain unity.

Banerjee, who had been silent on the matter for over a day, finally commented following statements from the Congress party.

The leader of the Trinamool Congress, known for her recitations of scriptures during the assembly polls in response to BJP allegations of minority appeasement, emphasized the importance of not engaging in discussions that could offend any section of the population.

Regarding Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remarks, Banerjee, referring to him as a junior, expressed her lack of clarity on the reasons behind his comments. She stressed the need for equal respect for all religions and conveyed her respect for the people of Tamil Nadu and South India. She appealed to them to respect the sentiments of all religions, underscoring India’s diversity and inclusive secularism.

Banerjee also highlighted her respect for Sanatana Dharma and the influence of the Vedas in Indian culture. She mentioned the government’s support for purohits and the presence of temples across the country, emphasizing her visits to temples, mosques, and churches.

Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remark characterizing Sanatana Dharma as something to be eradicated has given the BJP ammunition ahead of upcoming assembly elections. The BJP has condemned the comment as a “call for genocide” and accused Rahul Gandhi of being “Anti-Hindu” due to his silence on the issue.

The Congress has taken a nuanced stance, advocating for the respect of all religions and the right to express opinions. Younger Congress leaders like Priyank Kharge and Karti Chidambaram have supported Udhayanidhi Stalin, as has CPM’s D Raja.
