The National Investigation Agency (NIA) made a significant breakthrough today when they apprehended a man wanted in relation to the blast that occurred earlier this month at the city’s Rameshwaram Cafe and injured ten people. Shabir was taken into custody in Ballary this morning.
According to police sources, Shabir is thought to be a prime suspect’s accomplice. The prime suspect was captured on security camera footage shortly before the explosion leaving a bag at the cafe.
Since taking over the case on March 3, the anti-terror agency has asked for the public’s help in identifying the prime suspect, who is thought to have planted an IED (improvised explosive device) in the well-known Bengaluru restaurant on March 1.
At approximately 9 p.m. on the same day, additional video shows the suspect walking around a bus station. Prior to that, about an hour after the explosion at the cafe, he was observed getting on a bus.
The investigation team claims that following the incident, the suspect got dressed differently and took a bus to various locations.
This past week, the Rameshwaram Cafe reopened with tighter security. To protect both customers and employees, metal detectors have been placed at the entrance, and customers must pass through screening using handheld detectors. Before leaving his bag in the restaurant, the suspect was observed eating rava idli, according to the owner, Divya Raghavendra Rao.
“My mobile phone was not with me when the blast took place and when I picked it up, there were too many missed calls. When I called back my team, they told me that there was a blast in the restaurant,” she said.
