Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair a meeting with Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss the long-running Mahanadi water-sharing dispute.
The meeting will focus on finding a mutually acceptable framework for sharing and managing Mahanadi waters.
Senior officials and technical representatives from both states are likely to participate.
The Centre has been facilitating discussions between Odisha and Chhattisgarh as both sides work towards resolving their differences through dialogue and technical consultations.
CM Sai stated after meeting Majhi on September 20 that there were no major differences between the states and that they would work towards resolving the dispute soon. He further said both governments had agreed to consider recommendations from the Central Water Commission that were acceptable to both sides.
CM Majhi said the September 20 discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between Odisha and Chhattisgarh and promoting development in both states.
Earlier, Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil chaired a meeting with the two Chief Ministers on July 30 to discuss an amicable settlement.
The dispute has been pending before the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal since 2018.
Odisha has raised concerns over upstream projects in Chhattisgarh and their impact on downstream water availability, particularly outside the monsoon season.
The states have discussed issues linked to irrigation, water utilisation and broader river basin management.
Thursday’s meeting will take forward the political and technical discussions as both governments seek a negotiated solution while the tribunal proceedings continue.
