Made-in-India Jimny 5-Door Debuts In Japan; Boosts Maruti Suzuki’s Global Footprint

Maruti Suzuki’s ‘Made in India’ Jimny 5-door was unveiled in Japan on Thursday, marking a significant milestone for the company as it enters the Japanese market.

The Jimny 5-door has become the second-most exported model from Maruti Suzuki in FY 2024-25, further expanding the company’s global reach.

Manufactured exclusively at Maruti Suzuki’s Gurugram facility on the outskirts of Delhi, the Jimny 5-door continues the model’s legacy as a popular global off-roader, with exports to nearly 100 countries.

Meanwhile, this marks an important step in Maruti Suzuki’s export strategy as the second SUV, after the Fronx, supplied to Suzuki Motor Corporation’s home market in FY 2024-25.

Maruti Suzuki Managing Director & CEO Hisashi Takeuchi stated, “The introduction of ‘Made in India’ Jimny 5-door in Japan is a testament to the global level of excellence in our manufacturing capability. After its resounding success in markets like Mexico, Australia, and South Africa, we are confident that it will delight customers in Japan. The export of Jimny reaffirms our commitment towards ‘Make-in-India for the world’.”

Globally, Suzuki has sold over 3.5 million units of the Jimny in 199 countries and regions.

While the 3-door version was already available in Japan, the introduction of the 5-door version will likely enhance the model’s popularity.

The company statement however noted, “With India as a production base for Jimny 5-door, Suzuki aims to leverage Maruti Suzuki’s global production stature to meet the growing demand for the iconic off-roader brand.”

Maruti Suzuki dominated India’s passenger vehicle exports in 2024, shipping over 3.23 lakh units to nearly 100 countries.

With a 43.5% share of total exports, the company solidified its global presence.

Notably, the Fronx, introduced to the Japanese market in August 2024, received a positive response.
