Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to step in decisively to safeguard the rights, dignity, and constitutional aspirations of Sri Lankan Tamils, flagging deep concerns over Sri Lanka’s proposed constitutional reforms.
In a detailed letter to PM Modi, Stalin called for proactive and high-level diplomatic engagement by India to prevent further marginalisation of the Tamil community.
Stalin told PM Modi that the issue carries exceptional sensitivity for Tamil Nadu due to its enduring historical, cultural, and emotional bonds with Sri Lankan Tamils.
He said Tamil Nadu has consistently stood at the forefront of advocating its rights and could not remain a silent spectator at a moment that may shape its future for decades.
As Chief Minister, Stalin said he felt compelled to convey the anxieties expressed by respected Tamil leaders from India and Sri Lanka.
He warned that the ongoing constitutional reform process could trigger grave consequences for Tamils, who have already endured decades of discrimination, violence, and denial of political rights since Sri Lanka’s independence.
Stalin pointed out that Sri Lanka’s post-independence constitutions entrenched a rigid unitary state model that institutionalised ethnic domination and structural repression.
He said that even after the civil war ended, the past 16 years have seen demographic engineering, land appropriation, and a steady erosion of Tamil identity in traditional Tamil regions.
Referring to the present political climate, Stalin noted that the government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake appears to be accelerating efforts to introduce a new constitution.
He cautioned PM Modi that the proposed framework strengthens a ‘one-nation’ unitary model while sidelining legitimate Tamil demands for autonomy.
Stalin recalled the principles articulated during the 1985 Thimphu talks facilitated by India, including recognition of Tamil nationality, federal governance, equality, and full citizenship rights.
He warned that any constitution excluding these principles would perpetuate injustice and risk renewed instability.
Highlighting India’s historic role, including the 1987 Indo-Sri Lanka Accord, Stalin said PM Modi’s leadership remains crucial.
He urged PM Modi to engage Colombo at the highest level to press for a federal structure that protects minorities and upholds equality.
Such action, Stalin said, would reinforce India’s moral leadership and promote lasting regional stability.
