LS Polls: 857 Polling Stations, 4000 Police Deployed In Outer Manipur

Ahead of the second phase of the election scheduled for April 26, extensive preparations have been made in outer Manipur.

A total of 857 polling stations are set up, with 87 companies of paramilitary forces and over 4000 state police personnel deployed to ensure security and smooth conduct of the electoral process.

Pradeep Kumar Jha, Chief Electoral Officer stated, “13 Assembly segments of the outer-Manipur Parliamentary constituency are going for polls on 26 April. There are 857 polling stations including 9 special polling stations.”

“All the necessary arrangements have been done. 87 companies of central paramilitary forces and more than 4000 personnel from state police have been deployed for security, to ensure elections are free and fair,” Jha added.

The Chief Electoral Officer further asserted, “We are going to do webcasting of the critical and vulnerable polling stations. We will have 9 special polling stations in 3 districts for internally displaced voters.”

Pradeep Kumar Jha further highlighted that 191 polling stations will be managed by women polling personnel.

Earlier on 22 April, re-polling commenced at 11 polling venues within the inner-Manipur Parliamentary constituency.

The Election Commission ordered re-polling amid incidents of violence reported from polling stations on 19 April.

The re-polling was done amid tight security to avoid any mishaps.

The designated polling sites included Moirangkampu Sajeb Upper Primary School and S Ibobi Primary School (East Wing) within the Khurai assembly constituency, 4 in Kshetrigao, 1 in Thongju, 3 in Uripok, and 1 in Konthoujam.

Manipur saw a voter turnout of 69.18 per cent till 7 PM on 19 April.

Voting for the remaining 13 segments of Outer Manipur will be in the second phase on 26 April. The counting of votes will be on 4 June.
