Reality Check by Lieutenant Governor On Delhi Police

The working style of Delhi Police and increasing corruption in the department is once again hogging the headlines. The Lieutenant Governor showed Delhi Police the mirror with glimpse of reality on these issues in the presence of the Delhi Police Commissioner and also instructed the department to improve their functioning.

Till now only the people of the capital used to raise questions on the functioning of the Delhi Police and with allegations of corruption, but on Tuesday 21st of February, Deputy Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena also approved it. The Lieutenant Governor, who reached the Delhi Police Headquarters to take stock of the work of the police, said that the Delhi Police is considered the best in the country, but the working style of the police is under question. It is very important to end corruption spread in the department. There is a need to improve the negligence in the police stations of Delhi at many levels starting from listening to public complaints to registering FIRs.

Big questions on the working style of the police

Even though the Lieutenant Governor has praised the Delhi Police by describing it as the best, but by expressing concern over the functioning of the police and the increasing corruption in the department, he also showed the mirror to it. Be it the Kanjhawala incident or the Nikki Yadav murder case, in both the cases, the working style of the police was seen to be low-level. But the police did not take any lessons from these two incidents as well. Although blocks are claimed to have been carrying on the checking on streets, nevertheless only two-wheelers and small goods vehicles are targeted there.

The condition of the police stations is even worse

Delhi may be the national capital, but the reality is that no such thing is visible in the police stations of Delhi. In most of the police stations, the complainant is not even treated with respect. Even in registering FIRs on people’s complaints for investigation, cases of negligence keep coming to the fore daily. The Deputy Governor has also instructed the police to improve their working style on these issues.

Action should be taken on encroachment and illegal parking

In every area of Delhi, people complain of encroachment on the roads and illegal parking as well which are there as an obstacle during their daily commutation. Leaving the Lutyens zone, in Delhi this problem has taken a formidable form everywhere in all other parts of the city. Illegal parking has become a canker around all the big markets of Delhi. The traffic police in all the three interstate bus stands of the city, namely -Sarai Kale Khan, Kashmiri Gate and Anand Vihar, are proving to be completely ineffective. The Lieutenant Governor said that orders have been given to the Municipal Corporation and the PWD to take strict action to remove the encroachments. But the police is also free to take action against them.

Narayan Murthy also expressed anger

Infosys founder and UK Prime Minister’s father-in-law Narayan Murthy also launched a scathing attack on Delhi’s traffic system. Narayan Murthy, who came to Delhi on the foundation day of IIMA, said on Tuesday that he finds it very inconvenient to come to Delhi. Citing his journey starting from the airport, he said that a large number of drivers were leaving by breaking the traffic signals. There was no one there to stop them.

Top officials need to come out of their offices

Be it negligence in the criminal incidents happening on the city roads or traffic jams caused by illegal parking and encroachment, both these problems can be solved. But for this, top officers will have to come out of their offices and patrol problem-affected and sensitive areas. The Deputy Governor also advised the police officers to get on the road and establish a dialogue with the public.

There should be no negligence during the G-20 days

According to a top police officer, the entire system of Delhi Police seems to have come to a standstill for the last few months. In such a situation, it is very important to fix it before the G-20 summit. The reason is, if any major criminal incident happens during this time can tarnish the image of the country. For this, it is necessary to strengthen the police system in toto. The Deputy Governor has also said in clear words about this that the department should focus on making the citizens their eyes and ears by strengthening the system. But for this it is necessary that the department should pay attention to living up to the expectations of the public.
