Born on 19 February 1630, at Shivneri Fort in Pune, Shivaji Maharaj was a 17th-century warrior king and founder of the Maratha Empire. Indian history regards him as one of its greatest warriors.

In 1674, he formally established the Maratha Empire in western India after a series of battles against the Mughals.
