Kullu-Mandi Route Closed After Another Landslip Occurred During Heavy Rains

An official said on Saturday that the Kullu-Mandi National Highway was closed as a result of a recent landslip occurrence in the district.

The traffic alert was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by the deputy commissioner of the Kullu district. According to the most recent information, a landslip that struck the region earlier in the day has shut the Kullu-Mandi road through Pandoh and Kamand.

“A landslip caused by recent heavy rains has forced the closure of the Kullu-Mandi NH. Work is being done to get the traffic moving again, the Kullu DC announced on Friday.

The constant rain in Himachal Pradesh for more than a month has caused numerous landslides and cloudbursts in the state. According to the State Disaster Management Authority on Friday, as of this writing, 367 individuals have already passed away in the state as a result of rain-related disasters in 2023.

According to government data, since the start of the monsoon on June 24, roughly seven people have died every day on average in incidents related to rain in the hilly state.

The state is struggling under a mountain of financial loss due to infrastructure and property damage in addition to the loss of lives. The state’s disaster management agency estimated that the financial losses will total close to 12,000 crore.

Himachal Pradesh, also known as Dev Bhoomi, has seen massive landslides in a number of regions over the past two weeks. Teams have been formed by the state government to determine what caused the destruction. Additionally, in order to develop a workable solution, it intends to consult with specialists from other states around the nation.

Due to heavy rain on Friday, eight key roadways in Shimla experienced traffic delays. A landslip shut down approximately 13 key routes in the district on Wednesday. After prolonged periods of severe rain, incidents involving landslides, building collapses, tree uprooting, etc. have increased in frequency. The state has so far documented 113 landslides during this monsoon.
