Kharge Urges PM Modi To Hold Special Parliament Session On Operation Sindoor & Ceasefire Developments

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, the Indian response through Operation Sindoor, and the subsequent ceasefire understanding.

In his letter, Kharge referred to an earlier appeal made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on 10 May, reiterating the collective demand of Opposition parties for a parliamentary debate.

“Leader of Opposition Lok Sabha has already written to you again conveying the unanimous request of all Opposition parties for a special session of Parliament,” Kharge noted.

He emphasised the need to deliberate on the full scope of developments, including the ceasefire statements that first emerged from Washington DC, followed by similar announcements by the Indian and Pakistani governments.

Rahul Gandhi, in his communication to the Prime Minister, had written, “I reiterate the unanimous request of the Opposition to convene a special session of Parliament immediately.”

“It is crucial for the people and their representatives to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor and today’s ceasefire, first announced by US President Trump. This will also be an opportunity to demonstrate our collective resolve to meet the challenges ahead. I trust that you will consider this demand seriously and swiftly,” he further added.

Kharge Reiterates Demand In Official Capacity

Kharge, addressing the Prime Minister wrote, “You may kindly recall myself as Leader of Opposition Rajya Sabha and Leader of Opposition, Lok Sabha requested your good self, vide our letters dated 28 April 2025, to convene a special session of both Houses of Parliament in the wake of the inhuman terror attack in Pahalgam.”

“In view of latest developments, Leader of Opposition Lok Sabha has already written to you again conveying the unanimous request of all Opposition parties for a special session of Parliament to discuss the Pahalgam terror, Operation Sindoor and the ceasefire announcements first from Washington DC and later by the Governments of India and Pakistan,” Kharge reiterated, writing in his capacity as Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha.

Centre Briefs Leaders; PM Modi Holds Review Meeting

On 8 May, the Centre held an all-party meeting to brief political leaders on the military operation targeting terror infrastructure across Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and parts of Pakistan.

The government subsequently confirmed a pause in military operations following a mutual ceasefire understanding.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Modi chaired a high-level review at his residence with senior defence officials.

The meeting came amid relative calm along the border, with no fresh violations reported.

Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force stated that Operation Sindoor remains active.

Taking to X, the IAF posted, “The Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully executed its assigned tasks in Operation Sindoor, with precision and professionalism. Operations were conducted in a deliberate and discreet manner, aligned with National Objectives. Since the Operations are still ongoing, a detailed briefing will be conducted in due course. The IAF urges all to refrain from speculation and dissemination of unverified information.”
