Kerala Student’s Death; Probe Points Towards Suspended VC

A judicial commission report on death of a Kerala’s student Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has found dereliction on the suspended VC’s end. The committee submitted its report to Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Wednesday.

The second Year BVSC student was hanging in hostel bathroom in his college on February 18. Governor Arif Mohammad Khan suspended  the Vice Chancellor following the incident. State authority asked Justice (retd) A. Hariprasad to probe the matter particularly to find out the lapses on the part of the university, if any.

Probe mentioned of chaos and claimed of major lapses at the end of VC, Dr M.R. Saseendranath. Along with the VC, report questioned the reliability of the top officials, including the dean and hostel warden of the university for not doing their job properly.

After reviewing the post-mortem report, which revealed that the student’s stomach was empty, Governor Khan made the decision to request a judicial investigation. He said that something was “fishy” because the warden and dean were unaware of the student’s situation for days.

Before obtaining bail, eighteen students—the majority of them were members of the SFI (CPI(M) student wing—were arraigned as accused. Investigative unit held them in custody for more than two months.

Siddarth’s father, Jayaprakash, responded to the court report’s conclusions by saying that anybody found guilty of doing nothing should face harsh punishment; a simple suspension will not enough.

Incidentally, this report comes out at a time when the CBI probe is also underway.
