Kerala Boat Capsize Incident: A tragic incident took place in Kerala’s Malappuram district as a boat capsize incident rose to 22 on Monday, the Regional Fire Range Officer said. This incident happened near the Tanur coast.
Eight people were rescued after the boat capsized on Sunday evening and are undergoing treatment at various hospitals, district officials said.
The boat, which was carrying more than 30 people, capsized near an estuary close to the Thoovaltheeram beach in the Tanur area around 7:30 pm.
A senior district official told PTI that all the 22 people whose bodies have been recovered have been identified.
“We have requested the help of all agencies. NDRF and Coast Guard teams have already reached the spot. We have also sought the Navy’s help,” the official said.
The exact number of people in the capsized vessel is yet to be ascertained, the official added.
Meanwhile, Kerala Health Minister Veena George called an emergency meeting of the State Health Department at midnight following the incident and directed the officials to ensure better treatment for the injured.
The health minister has directed better treatment for the injured and the speeding up of the post-mortem process. The minister has also given strict instructions to start the post-mortem at 6 am on Monday.
On Sunday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the loss of lives in the Malappuram boat capsize incident and ordered the effective coordination of rescue operations.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the Tanur boat accident in Malappuram. Have directed the District administration to effectively coordinate rescue operations, which are being overseen by Cabinet Ministers. Heartfelt condolences to the grieving families & friends” said CM Pinarayi Vijayan in a tweet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the loss of lives in the incident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.
“Pained by the loss of lives due to the boat mishap in Malappuram, Kerala. Condolences to the bereaved families. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lahk from PMNRF would be provided to the next of kin of each deceased: PM @narendramodi,” said a tweet from the Prime Minister’s office on Sunday night.
