The Enforcement Directorate (ED) informed a Delhi court that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s consumption of mangoes, sweets, and tea with sugar in Tihar Jail is being used as a basis to seek bail. The ED opposed Kejriwal’s request for thrice-weekly doctor consultations due to his rising sugar levels.
Special public prosecutor Zoheb Hossain highlighted Kejriwal’s dietary choices, contrasting them with his claim of high diabetes. He presented this as grounds for denying bail during the hearing before special judge Kaveri Baweja.
Advocate Vivek Jain, representing Kejriwal, countered the ED’s assertions, accusing them of theatrics, and withdrew the application. Jain emphasized that Kejriwal was adhering to doctor-prescribed dietary guidelines, and the controversy was manufactured to curtail his access to home-cooked meals.
The court, requesting a report from Tihar Jail and a detailed diet plan followed by Kejriwal in custody, scheduled further proceedings for April 19.
Kejriwal filed the application on April 16, citing fluctuating blood sugar levels and the necessity for remote consultations with his regular doctor three times a week.
Arrested in the Delhi excise policy case on March 21, Kejriwal has remained in judicial custody since April 1. On April 10, the Delhi court rejected his plea to increase legal meetings from twice to five times weekly.
The Delhi High Court recently dismissed Kejriwal’s petition challenging his arrest, citing sufficient evidence presented by the ED suggesting his involvement.
