Karnataka: Family Beats Man to Death Over Intercaste Relationship; 4 Arrested

While it is said and believed by many that love knows no bounds, intercaste marriages in certain parts of the world still aren’t acceptable. An incident underscoring the same has recently come to light where a 20-year-old man in Kalaburagi area of Karnataka, was fatally assaulted over being in cross-religion relationship with a 16-year-old girl. Four individuals responsible for his demise have been apprehended, as reported by the police on Tuesday.

Details of the incident

The relatives of the girl invited the man, identified as Abhishek, to the house on Monday night. Subsequently, they attacked him with clubs and iron rods, according to the police. The official familiar with the development further highlighted that the minor and the accused belonged to different casts. The minor girl hails from the Lambani community (Scheduled Caste). On the other hand, Abhishek, a Kalaburgi native and second-year nursing student at a local paramedical college, was from the Maratha Kshatriya community. They were in love and in a relationship for the past three years. When the girl’s family learned of the relationship, they opposed it and warned Abhishek to stay away. However, the couple continued their communication via mobile phones.

In response to the ongoing relationship, the girl’s relatives allegedly devised a plan “to teach Abhishek a lesson.” The girl’s uncle instructed her to call Abhishek to her house, where he and other family members attacked him with clubs and iron rods.

Aftermath

Local residents informed the police, who transported the injured victim to Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) hospital. Abhishek succumbed to severe head injuries on Monday night, according to the police.

A case has been registered under Indian Penal Code Sections 307 (attempted murder), 302 (murder), 143 (unlawful assembly), and 146 (common intent by unlawful assembly). The police captured all four suspects, who had fled to a neighboring village after the assault. The accused were presented before the JMFC court, which remanded them to judicial custody for 14 days after the autopsy at GIMS district hospital on Tuesday.
