J&K Floods: Heavy Rain Disrupts Internet And Mobile Services; Schools In Jammu To Remain Closed

Heavy rain on Tuesday disrupted internet and mobile services across the Valley. Meanwhile, major rivers in the Jammu division are flowing above danger levels, causing widespread disruption to daily life.

Authorities ordered the closure of educational institutions in the Jammu division tomorrow.

“In view of the prevailing inclement weather conditions and the occurrence of flood-like situations, all government and private schools in the Jammu division shall remain closed on August 27 (Wednesday),” said a government order.

A bridge on the Jammu-Pathankot highway collapsed, forcing the highway’s closure. At the same time, shooting stones blocked the Jammu-Srinagar highway. Fresh snowfall on Zojila Pass closed the Srinagar-Leh highway.

Additionally, Sinthan Pass, connecting the Kashmir Valley with Kishtwar district, and Razdan Pass leading to Gurez town, remain closed.

Four people died in Doda district due to the severe weather. Two died when a house collapsed, and two were washed away by flash floods.

The Tawi River is flowing far above evacuation levels in Jammu city and Udhampur districts, prompting authorities to close the Tawi Bridge.

The Basantar River in Samba, the Ujh River in Kathua, and the Chenab River in Doda, Ramban, and Akhnoor areas are all above danger levels.

Several villages, including Janipur, Roop Nagar, Bhagwati Nagar, Gujar Nagar, Marh, and villages in RS Pura and Akhnoor, have been inundated.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah urged all line departments to stay on high alert and prepare for evacuations.

The Met Department warned that, although rain eased slightly in the afternoon, the next 24 hours will be crucial. Director Mukhtar Ahmad said the weather is likely to improve from Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities continue to monitor rivers, roads, and villages closely to protect residents and ensure timely action.
