Jharkhand's new CM Champai Soren and Rahul Gandhi
Champai Soren has assumed office as the 12th Chief Minister of Jharkhand, a state established 23 years ago. His appointment follows the arrest of Hemant Soren, former chief of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and longtime Chief Minister of the state. Notably, Champai Soren is the third leader from the JMM to take the oath as Chief Minister.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at Raj Bhavan, where Champai Soren, along with Congress’s Alamgir Alam and RJD’s Satyanand Bhokta, took the oath as ministers. Following the formation of the new government in Jharkhand, all JMM alliance MLAs were flown to Hyderabad via chartered plane.
Champai Soren expressed his intention to participate in the “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra” initiated by Rahul Gandhi when asked about it. He also lauded Hemant Soren, acknowledging his leadership and contributions to the state’s development, expressing confidence in his quest for justice.
In the 23-year history of Jharkhand, Arjun Munda and Shibu Soren have each served as Chief Minister three times. Raghuvar Das holds the distinction of being the only Chief Minister to complete a full five-year term. Ahead of Champai Soren’s swearing-in as the 12th Chief Minister, the national anthem was played at Raj Bhavan, followed by his oath-taking as the legislature party leader.
Champai Soren has represented the Seraikela constituency for 30 years, having won his first election in 1991. He has continuously served as an MLA from this seat and held ministerial positions twice in Hemant’s cabinet. Hemant Soren, who served as Chief Minister until January 2024, proposed Champai Soren’s name for the role after his own arrest in a scam case.
