On Friday morning, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MLA Ramdas Soren took the oath of office as a minister in the Hemant Soren-led government at Raj Bhavan. Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar administered the oath to the 61-year-old JMM leader, who represents the Ghatsila Assembly seat.
Ramdas Soren succeeds former Chief Minister Champai Soren in the state cabinet. The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Hemant Soren and several other cabinet ministers.
Moreover, Champai Soren, who had held the portfolios of Higher Education, Technical Education, and Water Resources, resigned amidst political turmoil and dissatisfaction. Speculation suggests that Ramdas Soren might inherit these portfolios, though this has yet to be officially confirmed.

Champai Soren’s resignation and his subsequent move to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could alter the political dynamics in the Kolhan Division, a region with significant tribal representation. His departure from the JMM and shift to the BJP could have substantial implications for the party’s influence in the area.
Political analysts anticipate that Ramdas Soren, a two-time MLA from Ghatsila and fellow Santhal tribal leader, will strengthen the JMM’s position in the Kolhan Division, a region that has been a hotspot of political tension.
Champai Soren’s resignation from the JMM on Thursday was followed by his announcement to join the BJP on Friday. In his resignation, he criticized the JMM’s “present style of functioning and policies” as reasons for his departure.
Notably, Champai Soren briefly served as Chief Minister of Jharkhand starting February 2, after Hemant Soren’s resignation and further arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case. Champai Soren was required to step down on July 3 to facilitate Hemant Soren’s return to the chief ministerial role following his release on bail.
