Jharkhand: JMM-Congress Coalition Wins Floor Test With 47 Votes

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-Congress coalition government, led by Chief Minister Champai Soren, won the floor test conducted in the Jharkhand assembly on Monday.

Securing a total of 47 votes, including the support of a nominated member, in the 81-member House, the ruling alliance demonstrated a clear majority. In contrast, the opposition NDA alliance managed to receive only 29 votes.

The floor test became necessary following the swearing-in of the new government led by Champai Soren, a few months ahead of both the Lok Sabha and assembly elections. Champai Soren assumed the Chief Minister’s position of Jharkhand after Hemant Soren resigned in the wake of his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate. The incarceration was in connection with a money laundering and land scam case. However, Hemant Soren is confident that he is innocent and also stated that he would leave politics if any of the accusations made against him were proven right in court. Hemant Soren’s successor, the JMM executive president, was granted permission to be present in the House during the crucial floor test proceedings.

Addressing the assembly, Champai Soren accused Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan of involvement in Hemant Soren’s arrest, alleging Raj Bhavan’s complicity in the incident. Expressing concern for the safety of tribals and Dalits under the current regime, Champai Soren pledged to return with more strength, asserting that the opposition’s conspiracy would be thwarted.

Hemant Soren, currently in a five-day custody of the Enforcement Directorate, faced accusations of money laundering. During the floor test debate, Chief Minister Champai Soren accused the BJP of manipulating central agencies to implicate his predecessor in the case, stating that the BJP had attempted to destabilize the democratically elected Jharkhand government.
