Jharkhand Assembly Gears Up For Crucial Floor Test, Champai Soren Government To Face Trust Vote At 11 Am

The focus now shifts to the upcoming floor test in the Jharkhand assembly, scheduled to commence at 11 am on Monday, as the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led coalition MLAs return to Ranchi from Hyderabad. Champai Soren, the interim chief minister following Hemant Soren’s arrest, will seek to prove his majority in the Assembly. The former chief minister, Hemant Soren, is expected to be released from jail to participate in the voting process.

The Jharkhand Assembly, consisting of 81 seats, requires a majority of 41. The JMM-led coalition enjoys a comfortable majority with 48 MLAs, including 29 from JMM, 17 from Congress, and one each from RJD and CPI(ML). However, not all MLAs may participate in the floor test. The NDA holds 29 MLAs, with BJP having 26 seats and AJSU having 3. The remaining 3 seats belong to Independents and others.

Section 144 imposed

To prevent potential poaching attempts by the BJP, the coalition MLAs were taken to Hyderabad, where they spent the weekend at Leonia Resort under tight security. The assembly’s special session prompted the Ranchi district administration to enforce Section 144 of CrPC within a 100-meter radius of the assembly building. These restrictions, effective from 8:00 am on Monday until 10:00 pm on Tuesday, prohibit any form of procession, rally, demonstration, or encroachment in the specified area.

In a parallel development, Bihar Congress MLAs have arrived in Hyderabad for a similar reason, even though the Congress is no longer part of the new government in Bihar. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s switch to the NDA led to this change, but the Congress aims to keep its MLAs together. The floor test for the new government in Bihar is set for February 12. The MLAs are expected to stay in Hyderabad until February 11, officially cited as a visit to meet Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.
