Jamia Millia Islamia paid glowing tribute to Bharat Ratna Dr BR Ambedkar on his 135th birth anniversary at a commemorative ceremony held at the FTK-IT Auditorium.
The event, themed ‘The Contribution of Baba Saheb Dr BR Ambedkar in Nation Building’, highlighted his lasting legacy.
Chief Guest Shri Lakshman Acharya, Governor of Assam, described Ambedkar as a beacon of hope whose vision transformed the nation.
“Dr Ambedkar spread light in times of darkness, and his thoughts continue to inspire us even today,” he remarked.
Jamia Vice Chancellor Prof Mazhar Asif, who presided over the event, emphasized that Jamia is more than an institution- it is a cultural and moral mission rooted in the values of equality and inclusion.
“We remain aligned with Ambedkar’s principles of justice and social upliftment,” he affirmed.
Keynote speaker Prof Vivek Kumar raised key questions on how Ambedkar should be studied and his limited political portrayal.
He stressed that Ambedkar’s vision carries historical, comparative, and international relevance that universities must fully engage with.
Prof Harbansh Dixit, Advisor to the Raj Bhavan, Assam, lauded the Indian Constitution’s holistic structure and called it the bedrock of democratic rights and social conscience.
He urged students to protect and practice its values in daily life.
The event began with the Jamia Tarana and the national anthem, followed by floral tributes to Dr Ambedkar.
The Vice Chancellor and Registrar presented copies of the Indian Constitution to dignitaries, reaffirming Ambedkar’s democratic vision.
Registrar Prof Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi delivered the vote of thanks, calling the ceremony a proud moment in Jamia’s history.
He appreciated the efforts of organizing members including Dr Kapil Dev, Dr Rajveer Singh, and others, along with Jamia’s NCC, security, horticulture, sanitation, and administration teams.
The event saw participation from deans, faculty, students, and staff, honoring Dr Ambedkar’s lasting impact on India.
