Jaishankar Speaks With Indonesian FM On West Asia; Holds Talks With Global Counterparts

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono over the phone on Thursday to discuss the evolving situation in West Asia and review bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

Sharing details of the conversation on X, Jaishankar posted, “Pleased to talk to FM Sugiono of Indonesia. Exchanged perspectives on the West Asia conflict. Discussed bilateral ties and agreed to hold the Joint Commission meeting at an early date.”

The conversation occurred amid continuing tensions in West Asia. The crisis intensified after joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28.

Following the strikes, Iran carried out drone and missile attacks targeting US assets, regional capitals and allied forces across West Asia.

Jaishankar Speaks With Multiple Foreign Ministers

In response to the ongoing crisis, Jaishankar has been engaging with several international leaders. Over the past few days, he has spoken with foreign ministers from Russia, Iran, France and South Korea as India maintains close communication with countries involved in the region.

On Wednesday, Jaishankar also held a telephonic conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. During the call, both leaders exchanged their assessments of the West Asia situation and reviewed ongoing bilateral cooperation.

Jaishankar additionally discussed the broader impact of the conflict with European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.

The External Affairs Minister also spoke with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, with both leaders sharing their perspectives on the current security developments in West Asia.

Earlier this week, Jaishankar held detailed talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi to review the latest developments in the region.

The Minister also spoke with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, discussing both the situation in West Asia and the progress of bilateral cooperation.

India has repeatedly emphasised the need for restraint, de-escalation and diplomatic dialogue.

New Delhi has also focused on safeguarding Indian citizens in the region and ensuring stable energy supplies amid the crisis.
