Shortly after a Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable fatally shot a senior RPF colleague and three passengers on the Jaipur-Mumbai Express, the Indian Railways terminated his employment. Following the horrifying incident, the accused, Chetan Singh (33), as apprehended. Currently, the constable is in judicial custody.
The tragic event unfolded on July 31 when the constable opened fire, killing his senior colleague and three fellow train passengers. This took place aboard the moving Jaipur-Mumbai Central Express near Palghar railway station in Maharashtra. Singh used his automatic weapon to kill ASI Tika Ram Meena and another passenger in the B5 coach. Subsequently, he targeted another passenger in a pantry car and yet another traveler in the S6 coach adjacent to the pantry car after 5 AM. Singh’s escape was thwarted when passengers pulled the train’s emergency chain, halting it near Mira Road station, allowing for his apprehension with the weapon.

The Railways initially issued a statement on August 2 asserting that the constable had not shown any signs of mental ailment during his last periodic medical examination. However, this statement was retracted within hours in response to media reports suggesting that the constable suffered from “abnormal hallucinations” and was diagnosed with a severe anxiety disorder. The Ministry of Railways clarified that the matter was investigated by the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Borivali.
“In this regard, it is stated that there is a system of Periodical Medical Examination (PME) of Railway Protection Force constables, and in the last PME, no such medical ailment/condition was detected,” the Ministry’s statement clarified.
