IRS Officer Gaurav Garg Attacked By Senior Official Yogendra Mishra In Lucknow Office

A violent clash broke out between two Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers at the Income Tax Office in on Thursday (29 May) in Hazratganj, Lucknow.

The altercation left 2016 batch IRS officer Gaurav Garg seriously injured.

Joint Commissioner Yogendra Mishra allegedly threw a glass at Garg, hitting him on the head and ear. Officials rushed Garg to the Civil Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.

Mishra Attacked with Glass & Paperweight

Sources said the clash started during a departmental inquiry. Mishra reportedly threw both a glass and a paperweight at Garg. Due to the high-profile nature of the case, most officials are avoiding comment.

However, Gaurav Garg has filed an FIR against Mishra at the Hazratganj police station. Garg’s wife, Raveena Tyagi, is an IPS officer posted in the LIU in Lucknow.

Yogendra Mishra No Stranger To Controversy

The Income Tax Department and political circles are actively discussing the incident. Mishra has faced controversy in the past. Senior officials had already received several complaints against him.

As a result, the department had earlier transferred him to Kashipur in Uttarakhand. He had arrived at the Lucknow office on Thursday for a departmental investigation.

Altercation Escalated During A Meeting

Around 4 PM, Mishra and Garg were in a meeting with a senior Income Tax officer. An argument broke out.

In a sudden outburst, Mishra picked up a glass and paperweight from the table and struck Garg’s head.

Mishra previously drew attention when IRS officers excluded him from a friendly cricket match. He created a scene by sitting on the pitch in protest.

The department responded by transferring him.

Sources revealed that several departmental investigations are underway against Mishra. These include allegations of threatening junior officers and using fake chats to blackmail them.

One confidential probe, led by Gaurav Garg, was reportedly the cause of Thursday’s confrontation. Mishra allegedly tried to pressure and influence the investigation.

DCP Central Ashish Srivastava confirmed the incident. “We registered an FIR based on IRS officer Gaurav Garg’s complaint. Legal action is underway. He is under treatment at Civil Hospital and is out of danger,” he said.
