Intense Political Controversy Erupts in Karnataka Over District Near Bengaluru

The jurisdictional dispute concerning Kanakapura has escalated, triggered by a heated exchange between former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. This contentious issue revolves around whether Kanakapura should remain part of Ramanagara district or be incorporated into the state capital, Bengaluru.

DK Shivakumar’s recent announcement that Kanakapura will be integrated into Bengaluru has ignited a fierce debate. Kumaraswamy has accused Shivakumar of orchestrating a plan to regularize alleged illegal activities in Kanakapura, questioning property ownership, benami transactions, and illegal encroachments.

Kumaraswamy vehemently opposes separating Kanakapura taluk from Ramanagara district and merging it with Bengaluru. He contends that the people of Kanakapura naturally belong to Bengaluru district, not Ramanagara, and views this proposal as a betrayal to Ramanagara.

During an event ahead of a temple renovation at Shivanahalli near Kanakapura, Shivakumar, who holds the Bengaluru Development portfolio and represents Kanakapura, urged the people not to sell land to Bengalureans, emphasizing their connection to Bengaluru. He claimed that he could increase the value of their assets substantially.

Kumaraswamy has criticized Shivakumar’s plan, alleging that it’s aimed at boosting property values in Kanakapura to benefit his personal finances. In response, Shivakumar defended the legitimacy of his proposal and dismissed Kumaraswamy’s claims as an attempt to discredit his intentions.

The dispute over Kanakapura’s jurisdiction continues, with strong opinions on both sides regarding its potential impact on the region and its residents. Currently, Kanakapura is part of Ramanagara district, a status that was established in 2007 when HD Kumaraswamy was the Chief Minister. Prior to 2007, Kanakapura was under Bengaluru Rural district.
