India’s Defence Production Reaches Record ₹1.5 Lakh Crore In 2024–25; Marks 18% Growth

India’s annual defence production has achieved an all-time high of ₹1,50,590 crore in the 2024–25 fiscal year, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced on Saturday.

The achievement reflects a robust growth trajectory, showcasing an 18 per cent rise from the previous year’s ₹1.27 lakh crore output.

Speaking on the milestone, Singh credited the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for steering India’s defence sector towards unprecedented success.

Taking to X, he posted, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi India’s defence production has hit a record high! The annual defence production has soared to an all-time high figure of Rs 1,50,590 crore in the Financial Year (FY) 2024-25. These numbers indicate a robust 18% growth over the previous fiscal’s output of Rs 1.27 lakh crore, and a staggering 90% increase since FY 2019-20, when the figure was Rs 79,071 crore.”

In a remarkable comparison, the Defence Minister highlighted that the 2024–25 figure represents a striking 90 per cent increase since 2019–20, when production stood at ₹79,071 crore.

Over the past five years, the sector has recorded consistent annual growth, fuelled by major reforms, increased indigenous production, and stronger public-private partnerships.

Singh described this expansion as a testament to the government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, which have placed domestic manufacturing at the heart of India’s defence strategy.

Collective Effort Behind the Success

Acknowledging the teamwork behind the record numbers, Singh praised the Department of Defence Production, the Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), and the country’s vibrant private sector.

“I commend the collective efforts of the Department of DefenceProduction and all stakeholders i.e., DPSUs, public sector manufacturers, and the private industry in achieving this landmark. This upward trajectory is a clear indicator of India’s strengthening defence industrial base,” he posted.

Furthermore, Singh underlined that the combined efforts of designers, engineers, researchers, and manufacturing teams have played a pivotal role in ensuring that India is not only meeting its own defence needs but also becoming a significant player in the global arms market.

Strengthening the Defence Industrial Base

India’s defence industry has undergone significant transformation in recent years.

Policies encouraging technology transfer, liberalising foreign investment, and creating a level playing field for private companies have expanded the sector’s capabilities.

As a result, advanced systems from combat aircraft and warships to precision-guided munitions and armoured vehicles are increasingly being designed and built domestically.

Moreover, exports have also seen an impressive upswing, with Indian-made defence equipment now reaching over 85 countries. This growing export footprint underscores the competitiveness and quality of India’s defence products on the international stage.

Looking ahead, Singh expressed confidence that India’s defence production will continue its upward climb. With major upcoming projects in missile systems, aircraft manufacturing, and naval platforms, the government aims to further reduce import dependency while enhancing indigenous capabilities.

He stressed that the continued collaboration between the public sector, private manufacturers, and start-ups will be crucial in sustaining this momentum. “We have set the stage for India to become a global hub for defence manufacturing,” Singh concluded.
