India’s Dairy Sector Grows 70% In 11 Years, Says HM Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday inaugurated the newly constructed Sabar Dairy Plant in Industrial Model Township, highlighting India’s rapid growth in the dairy sector over the past 11 years.

Built at a cost of Rs 325 crore, the plant houses state-of-the-art machinery and is expected to generate both direct and indirect employment.

India Emerges as Fastest-Growing Dairy Sector

Amit Shah said India’s dairy sector grew 70% under PM Modi, becoming the world’s fastest-growing, with milch animals rising from 86 million to 112 million and milk production from 146 to 239 million tonnes.

The newly inaugurated plant is the country’s largest production facility for curd, buttermilk, and yoghurt, with a daily capacity of:

  • 150 metric tonnes of curd
  • 3 lakh litres of buttermilk
  • 10 lakh litres of yoghurt
  • 10 metric tonnes of sweets

The Gujarat-headquartered Sabarkantha District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (Sabar Dairy) will supply dairy products to the entire National Capital Region and northern states, including Rajasthan, Haryana, Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. Shah noted that the expansion in Haryana will boost farmers’ incomes.

Shah, also holding the cooperation portfolio, said the Ministry and state governments have strengthened the cooperative system over the past four years. He said that by 2029, every Panchayat in India will have a cooperative Samiti.

He also highlighted the White Revolution 2.0 initiative, projecting that milk procurement by dairy cooperatives will reach 1,007 lakh kg per day by 2028-29. Shah added that India aims to develop the world’s most modern dairy plants domestically.

Shah said the dairy sector now involves eight crore farmers, and per capita milk availability has increased from 124 grams to 471 grams. He emphasised that the sector’s growth has significantly improved farmers’ prosperity, positioning India as the world’s top milk producer.

The inauguration saw the presence of Gujarat Vidhan Sabha Speaker Shankarbhai Chaudhary and Union Ministers of State Rao Inderjit Singh and Krishan Pal.

Also present were Gujarat Minister Bhikhusinh Parmar, Sabar Dairy and Amul chairmen, Haryana Minister Arvind Sharma, and BJP Haryana president Mohan Lal Badoli.
